“The greatest progress in life is when you know your limitations, and then you have the courage to drop them.”
~ Yogi Bhajan
What to expect in a Kundalini yoga class:
~ Tuning in
Every Kundalini yoga class begins with chanting the Adi Mantra:
“Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo”
“ I bow to the Infinite creative consciousness,
I bow to the Divine Teacher within”
This mantra connects us to our higher selves and accesses the link between us and the Divine teacher. When chanted correctly it stimulated the pituitary gland and automatically tunes us into higher consciousness.
~ Warming up
In order to prepare for the kriya, time will be spent thoroughly warming up the body with gentles stretches and asanas.
~ Kundalini yoga kriya
It is a series of asanas with specific pranayama (breath patterns) and mantras that will work on a specific theme, for example, we may work on the liver, the heart or on an aspect of the emotional body or the mind. The kriyas taught within Kundalini yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) are all taught in exactly the same way as they were taught by Yogi Bhajan himself. The specific way that the exercises are ordered and timed means that this is a completely safe way of practicing Kundalini yoga. Each kriya works in a complete and balanced way with the energy so that it is properly activated and grounded. The practice of Kundalini yoga strengthens the nervous system and the entire physical, mental and emotional being to receive and utilise the higher frequencies induced by meditation.
~ Relaxation
Following the kriya there will be a period of deep relaxation.
~ Meditation
There are many different meditations within Kundalini yoga. The combination of Kundalini yoga and meditation allows us to bring the meditative mind into everyday life, allowing us to live with a greater level of awareness.
~ Closing prayers
We finish the class by singing the long-time sun blessing and then chanting Sat nam 3 times.
